How do you grow from being a firm of one, five, 15 and beyond?

Take the leap and just hire that first person.

Consider a part-time contract arrangement to start.

Get an intern. Esp. from local college creative departments.

If you can’t imagine having dinner with them, they’re not a good fit.

Taking the leap to being a firm is easier said than done.

The popping of the economic bubble popping was good in ways. It propelled people were left in the firms, i.e. those not riffed or terminated, into positions of greater responsibility and/or authority.

For Patrick Sheridan, becoming an expert in his field was not a conscious decision. Writing a book really propelled his career and he had lots of great mentors in 20’s to help him achieve in 30’s +.

Questions from the audience

Q: What percentage of time should be devoted to garnering new sales? A: about 50%

Q: Should you go into business with your friends? A: Yes and no. Must be able to have dinner with them and must be able to have a very high level of trust. i.e. You should be able to trust your kids in their care.

Q: Recommendation on lawyers? A: Usually can get 30-45 minutes free with any attorney. Make sure to get a lawyer who specializes in small business. Same goes for accountants.

Google Ad Word and LinkedIn should be utilized. Don’t underestimate the power of engagement, even through social media although face-to-face is still best. MeetUp is also a great resources for meeting like-minded professionals.

In the end, know your value and position first before you go out and try to sell it to the world.

You Got Mobile in My Desktop: How Mobile Devices are Changing our Interactions With the Web

Modern mobile devices (smartphones and tablets of course) have been teaching users new ways of interacting with data. For the first time since the introduction of the point and click interface 30 years ago, users are interacting with a computer in a brand new way. The mouse is becoming an artifact, and so its usage patterns are going the way of the dodo and the light pen. Hear, from Intridea, how the computer in your pocket is informing the computer on your desk, and why the days of designing for one or the other are rapidly coming to a close.

http://www.slideshare.net/intridea/you-got-mobile-in-my-desktop-how-mobile-devices-are-changing-our-interactions-with-the-web

Emerging Usage Patterns of Tables in the Enterprise

The BoxTone discussion centered around the emerging usage patterns of tablets in the enterprise and how they are different from smartphones, laptops, and personal usage.

This year Intridea is proud to be a Platinum Sponsor of MobileUXCamp DC. The event is supported by other leading technology companies and will be attended by mobile application developers, content writers and marketers, and others that want to gain an understanding of entrepreneurship and innovation in the mobile space.

At Intridea we have been developing elegant mobile solutions for high-profile companies like Mashable, Oracle and Mitsubishi for the last several years. We work closely with clients to create meaningful, intuitive, and seamless experiences for their mobile users. We have gained the insight and experience that has allowed us to succeed in the cutthroat world of mobile development. That’s why our UX/UI and Mobile Engineering team will be at MobileUXCamp this year – to share their experience and to be a part of this event which aims to make mobile development more accessible and innovative.

MobileUXCamp is sold out, but you can still sponsor the event (or get added to the waitlist). If you’re already attending the event, be sure to swing by the Intridea Room to say hello throughout the day. You won’t want to miss our 45 minute presentation starting at 3:00pm:

You got Mobile in My Desktop: How Mobile Devices are Changing our Interactions With the Web

Modern mobile devices (smartphones and tablets of course) have been teaching users new ways of interacting with data. For the first time since the introduction of the point and click interface 30 years ago, users are interacting with a computer in a brand new way. The mouse is becoming an artifact, and so its usage patterns are going the way of the dodo and the light pen. Hear about how the computer in your pocket is informing the computer on your desk, and why the days of designing for one or the other are rapidly coming to a close.

From our open source development, conference presentations, design and development training sessions, and sponsoring local and national user groups and tech conferences, we are always looking for ways to support the community that we live, work and play in. We’re excited to be at MobileUXCamp this year to interact with the mobile community as they explore new (and more beautiful) ways to push the mobile space forward.

The Origin of Personas

Alan Cooper, author of The Inmates Are Running the Asylum, discusses the origins of this landmark book as well as challenges someone at Cooper to write the perfect “how-to” manual for creating personas.

The Design Community Offers Its Favorite Bits of Advice

The article starts off with this paragraph. The rest of the article is just like this with graphics and quotes in

We, members of the design community, are on an ongoing quest for knowledge and learning opportunities—anything we can find to enhance our skills and share the precious pearls of wisdom we’ve held close to our hearts. Given that most of us are where we are because of the shared advice we’ve managed to accumulate along the way, tips like these can be powerful tools for facilitating professional growth, which we all strive to achieve. And it helps the community to grow and improve. Thus, they should be not greedily hoarded, but rather openly shared.

Mobile Form Design Strategies by Chui Chui Tan

In this article, Chui Chui Tan writes about the constraints involved with designing web apps.

Web access from mobile devices is constrained by various factors: (1) the use environment where the user could be in a busy and crowded place. Sun or light reflection might be an issue or users may be multitasking and under time pressure; (2) the network (slow or an unstable connection); and (3) and the device itself (small screen).

25+ Inspiring iPad App Websites Design Examples

The title is somewhat self-explanitory. Not much more than pictures, but if you’re reading it on a iPad, you can click through to most of the apps. Note: Lots of images which slows down the page.
